JACER is committed to providing a rich, nurturing space that supports the development of children in its care. It includes indoor and outdoor spaces that allows for a flexible daily routine for children to make progress and encourages children to learn through play. Learning experiences are hands-on and are facilitated through interest areas.
The Creative Curriculum is a content-rich, developmentally appropriate curriculum that enhances academic rigor, social-emotional learning, cognitive development, and supports purposeful interactions for infants, toddlers, twos, and preschool children. It provides educators and early childhood providers the opportunity to use guided materials and resources to meet the unique needs, interests, and abilities of all children. Creative curriculum is research-based, and it is aligned to the Head Start Learning Outcomes Framework and early learning guidelines in New York.
Provider and/or assistant(s) will assess children’s improvement through progress monitoring, specifically through observations and documentation at least three times per year (when children enter the program, mid-year through the program and at the end of their program stay). Provider and/or assistant will use one formative assessment to assess children’s growth in the following developmentally appropriate areas: social skills, cognitive skills, language skills, social-emotional skills, mathematical skills, physical skills, literacy and skills. Using Brigance, children’s performance will be observed and noted as they work and play collaboratively in groups or independently. Provider and/or assistant will be able to gauge their instruction and interactions through assessment and progress monitoring.

Weather permitting, children will play outdoor. Children are always accounted for. Children will be required to dress appropriately for outdoor play. Sandals and flip-flops are not appropriate as they make it challenging for children to run and jump. The family will be required to provide protective clothing such as a long sleeve shirt, a hat for shading from the sun, and long pants in the event they are needed.
Children will spend most of the day in learning centers. These are defined areas set up with developmentally appropriate materials and resources which allow them to choose activities that are purposely-planned play experiences to enhance learning. Children will explore and learn in these centers as they are provided with adult support and supervision to acquire new skills. To name a few, the centers are blocks, science, dramatic play, library, cozy corner, listening, table-top, art, and sensory.
